Art Made for Interiors: Authorized Editions, Custom Scale and the Role of The Picturalist

Choosing artwork for an interior is rarely only about the image.

It is also about scale. Proportion. Framing. Colour. Architecture. And whether a piece can actually work on the wall for which it is being considered.

At The Picturalist, our approach has always been to bring those worlds together: the integrity of licensed art and photography, and the practical realities of interior design.

We believe exceptional imagery should not be confined to a single predetermined format. It should be possible to select a work because you love it, then produce it at the scale and presentation the room requires.

That philosophy is at the heart of our collection of fine art prints, framed open edition prints and decorative art made by licensed artists.

Authorized Art, Not Anonymous Decoration

Most artworks available through The Picturalist are authorized open-edition reproductions.

They are not unsigned images sourced without attribution. The artists, estates and image rights holders represented through our collections participate through licensing and royalty arrangements, including important collections such as Slim Aarons and Getty Images.

This distinction matters.

For us, making art more accessible does not mean separating an image from its creator. It means finding a way to make compelling artwork available to a broader audience while respecting the artist, photographer, estate or archive behind it.

Each work is therefore produced through an authorized source and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from The Picturalist or, where applicable, Getty Images.

Why Most Open-Edition Prints Are Not Individually Signed

An authorized open edition is different from an original artwork or a numbered limited edition.

Most of the fine art prints offered by The Picturalist are therefore not individually signed by the artist.

Instead, their authenticity comes from their authorized production, their documented source and the certificate supplied with the artwork.

This model allows us to offer considerably more flexibility in size and presentation. It is particularly important for interior designers, architects, hospitality designers and collectors who are choosing artwork for a specific wall rather than simply acquiring a standard-format print.

Art at the Scale the Room Actually Needs

A photograph that works beautifully at 24 × 16 inches may have an entirely different impact when a designer needs artwork above a twelve-foot sofa, across a hotel lobby or within a large architectural wall.

That is where The Picturalist differs from a conventional print shop or traditional edition gallery.

Many works in our collection can be produced in a range of sizes and adapted to the proportions of the project. They can then be paired with custom framing, mats, borders and presentation options.

The objective is simple:

Choose the artwork first. Then allow the scale and framing to respond to the interior.

For the design community, this turns artwork into a genuine material within a project rather than something selected after the room has already been completed.

Decorative Art Can Still Have Provenance

The word “decorative” can sometimes be misunderstood.

For us, decorative art made by licensed artists does not mean disposable imagery chosen simply because it matches a sofa.

Good decorative art should still have authorship, intention and a story behind it.

A Slim Aarons photograph brings with it the visual history of twentieth-century leisure and society. A Getty Images photograph may carry the cultural memory of fashion, cinema, travel or an extraordinary historical moment. A work by one of The Picturalist’s contemporary artists introduces the particular visual language developed through that artist’s practice.

The artwork can therefore work beautifully within an interior while remaining interesting long after the room's colours have changed.

That balance is central to our approach to wall art for interior design.

A Resource for Interior Designers and Hospitality Projects

Professional designers often need artwork to satisfy several requirements at once.

The image must suit the concept. The scale must work architecturally. Production must be reliable. Framing must complement the project. Delivery timing matters. And for larger projects, several pieces may need to work together as a coherent collection.

The Picturalist was built to help address those needs.

Our Bespoke Wall Art Solutions and Art Consultation Services allow designers to source individual works, coordinated groupings, gallery walls and Curated Art Collections for residential, hospitality, office and real estate projects.

This can include:

custom sizing, custom framing, coordinated sets, large-scale statement artwork, monochrome adaptations, diptychs and triptychs, or curated groups selected around a particular palette, subject or atmosphere.

For hotels, restaurants and commercial spaces, this approach allows artwork to become part of the identity of the interior.

For residential designers, it provides access to High-End Interior Design Art without restricting every project to the fixed dimensions associated with traditional editions.

And What About Collectors?

The flexibility of an open edition does not replace traditional collecting. It serves a different purpose.

For collectors who prefer numbered or estate-authorized limited editions, selected Slim Aarons photographs are also available as limited editions.

These are different from the made-to-order open-edition works.

Slim Aarons limited editions are offered unframed and only in the original edition size assigned to that particular photograph. Dimensions vary by image, although many are approximately 24 × 16 inches.

For these works, the original edition format is part of the collectible object and is therefore preserved.

The Picturalist can consequently serve two different types of buyer.

One may be a collector seeking a traditional photographic edition.

Another may be an interior designer who loves the same imagery but needs it at 40 × 60 inches to achieve the correct proportion within a room.

Both are legitimate ways of living with art.

Democratizing Art Without Diluting It

The original idea behind The Picturalist was to make compelling art and photography easier to use in real interiors.

Not everyone purchasing art is building a conventional collection. Sometimes the starting point is simply a wall that needs the right image.

And sometimes that first purchase becomes the beginning of a lifelong interest in an artist or photographer.

By offering authorized open editions, custom sizing, The Picturalist Custom Framing and Turnkey Art Solutions, we can make that first step considerably easier.

The work remains connected to its creator. The production remains high quality. But the client has greater freedom to make the artwork work for their home, hotel, office or design project.

That, to us, is what it means to democratize art.

Not to make art less meaningful.

To make meaningful art easier to live with.
