For gallery wall arrangements, square prints are the most forgiving format — the consistent geometry removes the need to plan negative space between works, making mixed-size groupings easier to compose. Vertical figurative prints are a specific subset of the portrait format — works where the vertical orientation is intrinsic to the subject itself: full-length figure photography, editorial fashion imagery, ballet and performance photography, and any composition where the human form defines the vertical axis of the piece. These are works that were always meant to be tall — not adapted from a horizontal original but conceived in portrait format from the moment of capture.

Shape Decision Guide — Which Format for Which Wall

Above a sofa (3-seat, standard width) → Horizontal Ratio 1.5, minimum 40" wide. The horizontal axis of the sofa and the artwork should align — the print should span at least two-thirds of the sofa width.

Above a bed (king size) → Horizontal Ratio 1.5 or 1.75, or a pair of vertical works flanking the headboard. For a single work, aim for 60–70% of the headboard width.

Entryway or narrow hallway → Vertical Ratio 1.5 as a single commanding piece, or a series of consistently sized vertical works at regular intervals for longer corridors.

Gallery wall → Square Ratio 1 as the most forgiving anchor format, combined with horizontal and vertical works in proportional sizes. Keep frame profiles consistent across all pieces.

Bathroom or powder room → Square Ratio 1 or Vertical Ratio 1.25 — compact formats that command a small wall without overwhelming it.
