The Picturalist is proud to operate as a Zero Landfill company. Our environmental commitment spans every stage of production, from raw material sourcing to the packaging that arrives at your door.

Understanding Our Terms

We use precise language when describing our environmental practices:

• Green: Broadly beneficial to the environment in some way.
• Eco-friendly: Does not actively harm the planet.
• Sustainable: The most rigorous standard — generates environmental, social, and economic benefits without depleting resources for future generations (per the United Nations definition).

Our goal is sustainability, not simply eco-friendliness.

Conscious Sourcing

• Moulding is Made in the USA whenever possible, reducing transportation carbon footprint.
• All paper is sourced from sustainably managed, FSC-certified forests.
• We never purchase wood from endangered species.
• We collaborate with vendors to develop innovative sustainable packaging materials.

Conscious Waste: Zero Landfill Operations

• Every recyclable or upcyclable material is diverted from landfill.
• A trash compactor and can crusher reduce the frequency of waste hauls and associated emissions.
• All ink and toner cartridges are refilled or recycled.
• Electronic waste is processed through specialized channels to prevent chemical leaching.
• Zero catalog printing by-products end up in landfill — everything is recycled.
• Residual waste is converted into energy or concrete-making materials.
• Outgoing boxes are re-mailed and re-purposed through an internal ‘Send It Forward’ program.

Conscious Consumption

• Improved order scheduling reduces energy waste during production.
• HVAC systems are the most energy-efficient available.
• White roof coating reflects heat and reduces cooling energy use.
• Energy-efficient lighting saves approximately 64,000 watts per year.
• Low-flow toilets reduce water consumption.
• Company-wide computer power-saving programs cut energy use by half.
• Paperless payroll operations save 472 lbs of landfill space annually.

Studio Moulding

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and COC (Chain of Custody) certified. Committed to sustainable forest harvesting practices.

Framerica — Bonanza Wood

Licensed under the Composite Panel Association's Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) Downstream Program. Bonanza wood is manufactured from post-consumer wood waste — reclaimed pallets, construction trim, and sawdust — that would otherwise be destined for burning or landfill.

Legion Paper

ISO 14001 certified environmental management system. Papers include Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) and Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) options. Many papers are 100% cotton made from textile industry byproduct linters. Moab by Legion Paper operates on 100% wind energy and participates in Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky renewable energy program.
