ABOUT FLORENCE KNOLL
In 1941 Florence Schust moved to New York after graduating from Cranbrook and working with many of the greatest architects in the world. There she met Hans Knoll, who was establishing a new furniture company. With Florence’s design skills and Hans’ business acumen and salesmanship, the pair, who married in 1946, grew the nascent company into an international arbiter of style and design. Florence also seeded contributions with her friends Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, and Mies van der Rohe.
Pioneering architect, designer, and businesswoman Florence Knoll Bassett, who died at age 101 in Florida, is best remembered for defining the modern office, but changing the way we work represents only a fraction of her wide-ranging contributions to design. Through her own furniture creations, including the oval-topped desk table and streamlined sofa she created for Knoll, the now-iconic work she commissioned from the likes of Marcel Breuer, Isamu Noguchi, and Harry Bertoia as partner and creative force behind Knoll Associates, and her groundbreaking approach of “total design,” Knoll Bassett basically wrote the book on modern interior design, as one longtime friend recalls.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anthony Jenkins lives and creates in rural Mono, Ontario, north of Toronto. For four decades, his editorial illustrations, caricatures and portraits delighted the readers of Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail.
He has traveled the world with a sketchpad, visiting eighty-three countries to date. His first love is black and white. His later colour work is inspired by the vivid life and hues of the Third World.
In his own words: “A likeness captured is a given. If it may be captured elegantly, in just a few, telling lines that dance and please the eye in their own right, that’s the goal.”
