ABOUT EILEEN GRAY
Eileen Gray was an Irish architect and furniture designer and a pioneer of the Modern Movement in architecture. Over her career, she was associated with many notable European artists of her era, including Kathleen Scott, Adrienne Gorska, Le Corbusier, and Jean Badovici, with whom she was romantically involved.
She was hired by socialite Juliette Levy to design her residence. The Rue de Lota apartment has been called "the epitome of Art Deco." The furniture included some of Gray's best known designs – the Bibendum Chair and the Pirogue Day Bed. Le salon de verre (Glass Salon) designed by Paul Ruaud with furniture by Eileen Gray, was awarded great critical and financial success and prompted Gray to open her own shop in 1922 under the name ‘Jean Désert’ and was located on the fashionable Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. The shop was named after an imaginary male owner “Jean” and Gray's love of the North African desert. Clients included James Joyce, Ezra Pound and Elsa Schiaparelli.
Early on, Gray used luxurious materials like exotic woods, ivory and furs. In the mid-1920s, her pieces became simpler and more industrial, reflecting her growing interest in the work of Le Corbusier and other Modernists.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anthony Jenkins lives and creates in rural Mono, Ontario, north of Toronto. For four decades, his editorial illustrations, caricatures and portraits delighted the readers of Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail.
He has traveled the world with a sketchpad, visiting eighty-three countries to date. His first love is black and white. His later colour work is inspired by the vivid life and hues of the Third World.
In his own words: “A likeness captured is a given. If it may be captured elegantly, in just a few, telling lines that dance and please the eye in their own right, that’s the goal.”
